Quick answer

To convert US dollars to euros, divide the amount by the EUR/USD rate, which is the number of dollars you get for one euro. At an example rate of 1.16, 1,000 USD is about 862 EUR, and 1,000 EUR is about 1,160 USD. The calculator loads the latest ECB reference rate automatically and works in both directions.

How do you convert USD to EUR?

Exchange rates are quoted as EUR/USD, which tells you how many dollars one euro buys. If the rate is 1.16, one euro costs $1.16. To go from dollars to euros you divide by the rate: $1,000 ÷ 1.16 = €862. To go from euros to dollars you multiply: €1,000 × 1.16 = $1,160. The tool does this for you in either direction, and the table underneath shows 1, 10, 100 and larger amounts, which covers searches like 1000 USD to EUR or euro to dollar.

Euro to dollar: mid-market rate versus the rate you get

The rate shown is the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the interbank market. Your bank, card or transfer service will give you a worse rate and sometimes add a fixed fee as well. Typical margins range from about 0.3% for specialist transfer firms to 2% or more for card payments abroad and airport exchange desks. On a $5,000 transfer, a 2% margin costs $100, so it is worth comparing providers before moving larger amounts.

Why does the rate move?

EUR/USD reflects interest-rate differences between the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve, growth and inflation expectations, trade flows and risk sentiment. Over the last decade it has traded in a broad range around parity to 1.25. A swing of 5% within a year is normal, which matters if you are paying a US supplier or receiving a US salary and converting later.

Practical uses in the Netherlands

  • Freelancers invoicing US clients should invoice in dollars or euros deliberately and add the conversion to their income in the ZZP calculator, since Dutch tax is computed in euros.
  • Expats receiving US dollars can check the euro equivalent of a salary before comparing with the Netherlands salary calculator.
  • Investors holding US shares should also remember the exchange-rate effect in the Investment Return Calculator, which uses end values in euros.
