In Dutch construction a calculator is a cost estimator: the person who prices a project from drawings and specifications and prepares the quote. Indicative gross salaries run from about €2,900 a month for a starter to about €7,000 for a lead estimator, depending on sector, region and collective agreement. Most estimators have vocational (MBO 4) or higher (HBO) education in construction or installation technology.
What does a calculator do in construction?
In the Netherlands, the word calculator in a job title does not refer to a device but to a profession: the cost estimator in construction and installation technology. The estimator reads drawings and the specification, determines the quantities of material and labour hours, requests prices from suppliers and subcontractors, and builds the budget and the quote. A good estimator often decides whether a company wins a tender and whether the project turns out profitable. Price too low and the company loses money, price too high and it loses the job.
Calculator, werkvoorbereider or project manager?
| Role | Focus |
|---|---|
| Calculator (estimator) | Before the contract: estimating costs, preparing quotes and tenders |
| Werkvoorbereider (planner or work preparer) | After the contract: planning, purchasing, construction drawings and orders |
| Site manager or project manager | During construction: supervision, quality, budget and schedule |
At smaller firms one person often combines the estimator and planner roles, which shows up in adverts as “calculator/werkvoorbereider”.
Types of estimator jobs
- Construction estimator: housing, commercial buildings, renovation.
- Installation estimator: electrical, mechanical, plumbing and climate systems.
- Civil engineering estimator: roads, water and earthworks.
- Metal and industry estimator: product costing and quotes for custom work.
What does a calculator earn?
Salary ranges in adverts are roughly: a junior estimator €2,900 to €3,500 gross per month, medior €3,500 to €4,500, senior €4,500 to €5,500 and a lead estimator or head of estimating €5,500 to €7,000. These are indications. The exact amount depends on the sector, region, company size and collective agreement (CAO), for example the CAO for construction and infrastructure or for metal and technology. Holiday allowance of 8% normally comes on top, see the Holiday Allowance Calculator, as does a possible lease car with bijtelling. The calculator above estimates net pay for the chosen level or your own salary, based on the Netherlands Salary Calculator.
Education and skills
- Education: MBO 4 in construction or installation technology, or an HBO degree in construction, civil or mechanical engineering. Many estimators come from site work.
- Software: Excel, dedicated estimating packages and BIM tools.
- Skills: precision, analytical thinking, knowledge of building materials and processes, and negotiation with suppliers.
